Who Took "The Christ" Out Of Xmas...
By E. Lee Sullivan Whether we take into account the origins of Christmas beginnings with Constantine, the winter solstice, paganism or a hand me down American tradition, our view of Christmas still appears to have it’s roots in a commercializing racket that Christmas comes from department stores, the malls and now Internet shopping. If Jesus himself came to talk to us today, would he say that Christmas is about celebrating him and his birth or his message. It appears its easier for people to buy gifts, sing carols, attend church services, get drunk, travel, over eat and party rather than to deny themselves, pick up their crosses, follow him and do greater works than he did. Could you imagine a world at Christmas time where humanity were behaving like Christ or being "Christ like" doing as he did rather than falling into the emotional trap of purchasing things that we are still paying for months later. Old habits die hard especially when one has been indoctrinated into a way of life which has become symptomatic of an addiction. Today’s society of lies of a Santa Claus, elves, trees, high cholesterol egg nog, overindulgence of food and alcohol, travel expenditures, gift wrapping, card sending and gift purchases have left The Christ out of Christmas. There appears to be no room not just in the inn for Jesus, but also not in the so called celebrating of his birth. How many families like in the old TV Peanuts special actually sit down with their children and tell them the true history/meaning of Christmas? Do today’s children even know who he is, why he came, what he believed, what he stood for what he taught and why he was killed. (This article will not focus on the belief held by some researchers that Jesus Christ was a myth or that he lived but was not crucified.) Or do children think of Christmas as just a time to give gifts, get toys and presents, be out of school and visit relatives. Who took “The Christ” out of Xmas, just glance in the mirror for the answer. Why should we blame the retailers, television programming, the government, the government behind the government or even yo mama? What is being done can be undone, but are we too cowardly to take truth into our hands and be about Jesus’s business, at least at Christmas time. Suicide is up doing the so called holiday season could it be that people have bought into the belief that Christmas is about materialism rather than embracing the doctrine of Christ that you are never alone because he sent The Holy Spirit and that you are always loved because he lives and he loves you. At an anti Iraq war rally Mr. Dick Gregory suggested that Americans boycott the holidays for social justice, (I certainly did) we could have done it, but why didn’t we? Mr. Gregory was right later when he spoke saying “Ya’ll (black people) ain’t gont do it.” Some leaders wouldn’t relay Mr. Gregory’s suggestion because it would have affected their funds/funding. Other people wouldn't do it because they are too conditioned, too Willie Lynched, too weak or just plain didn’t want to. It’s just ingrained in their DNA, and our genes. But there is a spiritual awakening happening today mostly due to the forces of the Universe that affect us earthlings. So as we evolved, transform and grow, the powers that be intend to chip us like dogs in the guise of progress, but in truth to control us. They realize that the kingdom of God is at hand, so they must do all they can to maintain power over our minds, our thinking our belief systems our every day life. The greatest of spiritual leader from Moses, Buddha, Jesus Christ, Ghandi to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., knew that the message was greater than the messenger. Their teachings are left with us to pratice and honor not just for celebrating. (c)els 2007
I'm actually working my way to becoming a vegan as I do not eat much dairy or cheese (I do like Fage greek yogurt a lot!). And I need to get rid of sweets.
No, I haven't traveled to Africa yet. There's a professor here in the Bay Area who gives yearly trips to Kemet (Egypt). I may try to go next year. I've done some traveling to the U.K and Italy. (The picture of me is from Florence, Italy)
Oakland is a nice city, but it does have its problems. I'm originally from Brooklyn, NY and moved here back in 1991.
What was the last book you've read?
What's your favorite vegan meal?
Do you cook?
Take care, Tam
No, I'm not 100, but at least half of that. Actually, I stopped eating pork in '78, red meat in '80, poultry and seafood in '87; and became vegan in '96. Wow. That's a lot of math. I'm also curious by your "war" as primary goals.
Your Hip Hapa,
Yayoi
